About Australian Fine China
Founded in 1921, over the years the business has changed names several times. Originally incorporated as the Calyx Porcelain and Paint Company, the business traded under that name until the early 1940’s. In the 1930’s the business became a victim of the depression and was transferred to government ownership. In a nationalised state the business continued to make tableware, giftware and sanitary ware – still under the Calyx trade name.

On 31st May 1941 management of the business was taken over by the firm of HL Brisbane and Wunderlich whose business was focussed of the manufacture of roofing tiles and pressed steel. Almost immediately the branding became "Bristile” or "B&W” and, most famously, "Wembley Ware” named after the suburb on whose borders the plant was located. Wembley Ware is much sought after by collectors today with individual pieces fetching hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

During the war years, the difficulties of importation of suitable quantities of crockery saw the business developing vitrified hotelwares – particularly for use by the Armed Forces and this set the stage for the discontinuation, in 1962, of all production of "fancywares”.
